Lens Implant Options during Cataract Surgery

There are many different types of lens implants to choose from. On

the market today there are options that correct a combination of distance,

intermediate, and near vision as well as astigmatism. Not everyone is a candidate for every lens. Discussion with your surgeon about lens choice

is a very important part of the preoperative discussion.

Types of Lens Implants

Monofocal lens implants correct for distance vision only. You will need glasses for intermediate and near vision with this lens. This is the lens implant that most insurances cover.

Astigmatism correcting lens implants are also called toric lens implants. If you have significant astigmatism it must be corrected for clear vision without need for glasses at all distances.

Multifocal lens implants are implants that can correct for a combination of distance, intermediate, and near vision. These can also be combined with astigmatism correction if needed. Multifocal lens implants provide freedom from glasses for most activities, but may still be required for some tasks. This is the most advanced lens technology.
